The days passed in a whirlwind, and each day Alec prayed Nicholas had figured something out, but each passing day with no progress diminished his hopes. They hadn't dared anything at work, but several nights he had driven to Nicholas's house to stay the night, much to Ariel's girlish glee. He'd had to face the harsh reality—she had grown up and didn't need him as much any more. He had even entertained the idea that maybe soon he would be able to move in with Nicholas, and let her have the house, but he wasn't about to rush the situation. As it was, he was turning into a nervous wreck. He forced himself to roll out of bed and get dressed for work on the last day of the two weeks. Despite his eyelids feeling like lead weights and his brain wrapped in cotton, he had redrafted his letter of resignation the night before, which had led to hours of tossing and turning. Despite Nicholas's intelligence, there were some situations for which perfect solutions just weren't available. Unfortunately, their working and relationship status was one of those.

With a sinking heart, he picked at his food before pushing it away. After pressing a soft kiss against his sister's forehead and ruffling her hair, he headed to work. It took longer than normal for him to get past the security deck; for some reason, the guard had decided to share the latest political news with him. Unwilling to give him the brush-off, and knowing he was early anyway, he spent almost ten minutes listening to what the politicians were doing now to screw up things in the capitol. Finally, he managed to break away as a group of businessmen came into the building, needing directions to a certain office.

Thankfully, no one was in the elevator, so he was able, without curious eyes watching, to lean against the wall and prepare to turn in his notice and terminate his employment. Taking several deep breaths, he blinked to clear his eyes, hoping he wouldn't break down and make a fool of himself. It certainly wasn't the way he wanted to end things.

When the elevator doors dinged open, he found the floor curiously deserted. And dark. Looking around, he found a few lantern flashlights strewn about on various desks, and a sign with a big arrow pointing toward the conference room. Curious, he paused only long enough to set his briefcase on his desk before following the sign. More flashlights pointed the way to the stairs leading up to the garden. Heart suddenly racing, he climbed the stairs and found his coworkers crowded into the rooftop garden. A big banner hung over the doorway. The words, IF YOU

LEAVE, WE WILL MISS YOU, blazed across its length in bright red letters. Sitting directly underneath it was a table filled with cake and drinks, and trays of finger foods. Feeling the familiar ache of tears in his eyes, Alec stepped into the greenhouse, his gaze searching for Nicholas.
